Hi, My ggGrandfather was William HUNTER who first appears in an 1870 census for Appling county, Georgia USA. He is listed as 20 years old and born in New Jersey. The birth place (NJ) may not be true, as he was living at this time in the home of his future in-laws who WERE in fact from NJ (or NY). The family was James and Ruth Wood DECKER, and their children: Fred, Elmira, and George.
I would think that he is related to the Hunters of Hunter's station, in Screven county but I can not prove it. Most Hunter's came from Virginia and/or North Carolina. William was listed as a laborer. His nickname was Bill. He later married Elmira DECKER, and had the following children: Benjamin Franklin (my gGrandfather) about 1872, Lula about 1876, Sallie about 1877, Sarah about 1878, Charles about 1879, William about 1882, and Hattie about 1889.
William HUNTER left Elmira Decker HUNTER about 1890, and family history says that his wagon was found near Darien, Georgia (Camden County), near Brunswick. At first he was presumed dead, but the family found out that he had gone on to have another family in Florida. Possibly the Miami / Homestead area. So where he ended up being buried is a mystery. What we (the others who are also searching) would like to find out is 1)where his final resting place was, and 2)who his parents were. We think that his parents may have been a Benjamin and Sarah HUNTER since there is a family as such listed in the 1850 Appling County, Georgia census with a William listed as age 2. Then it looks like this same family shows up in the 1860 Telfair County, Georgia census living with a Peter and Catherine WHITE. William is listed as age 12. This Benjamin HUNTER in both census records is listed as originating in England, and Sarah originating in Georgia. However, we can only guess about these being our William HUNTER's parents because there are so many Hunter's in Georgia at this time. If anyone recognizes this line, please let me know. I am grateful for any efforts. God Bless. Phil
