John O. Ellis was the third in line of John Ellises. His father was John Ellis, Jr. (1812-1856) who married Bathsheba Hatton. John was the son of an earlier John Ellis (c1770-c1842) who came from the Carolinas into Georgia. Bathsheba Hatton was the daughter of William Hatton and Mary (Polly) Lott.

John O. Ellis married Sarah Ann Ellis, who is believed to have been one of the illegitimate children of Martha Ellis (b. c1835). Martha was a daughter William Ellis (1797-1867) and wife Sarah Williams (1804-1875).This William Ellis was a son of John Ellis (c1770-c1842). Therefore, John O. Ellis married the daughter of his first cousin Martha. I have however seen something that said Sarah was not in fact an Ellis, but a Johnson. You may want to look into this.
My mother was an Ellis and the sister of John B. Ellis who maintains this website. He knows more about the Ellises than anyone on the planet earth.
